凹版印刷術大約產生於15世紀中葉凹版印刷與凸版印刷原理相反,印版的圖文低於空白部分,版面結構類似於我國古代的拓石,只是著墨部位正好與拓石相反。

凹版印刷術大約產生於15世紀中葉凹版印刷與凸版印刷原理相反,印版的圖文低於空白部分,版面結構類似於我國古代的拓石,只是著墨部位正好與拓石相反。

文字與圖像凹於版面之下,凹下去的部分攜帶油墨。印刷的濃淡與凹進去的深淺有關,深則濃,淺則淡。

因凹版印刷的油墨不同,用這種印刷方法印刷出來的成品錶面墨跡微微凸起,易於辨別,難以模仿,印刷的線條有凸出感,因而錢幣、郵票、有價證券等均採用凹版印刷,凹版印刷也適於塑料膜、絲綢的印刷。

但凹版印刷由於製版時間長、工藝復雜等原因,所以成本很高。凹版印刷的印版可分為雕刻凹版、蝕刻凹版和照相凹版。

雕刻凹版印刷是意大利人腓納求賴發明的,1477年,曾有人用此方法印製過地圖到19世紀初葉,歐洲開始用此方法復制名畫,印有價證券,使凹版印刷術逐漸地發展成一種獨具特色的印刷方法。
