書籍設計印刷前字號的設置。字號是區分文字規格大小的名稱,印刷中通常採用號數制和點數制來規範字號。

號數制是我國用來計算漢字鉛活字大小的標準計量單位。

點數制是世界上通用的計算鉛活字的標準計量單位,現在電腦中的字號多數以點數來計算。

“點”,也稱“磅”,是由英文 Point翻譯過來的,縮寫為“P”,1點為0.35毫米。

目前書籍正文中使用比較多的五號字為10.5點,3.69毫米。一號字為28點,9.668毫米字號的大小直接關繫到閱讀效果和版面美觀,因此要根據內容需要和讀者對象認真選擇。

正文一般用中號字,大號字一般用於大小標題以示醒目,小號字一般用於註解、說明等。

針對不同的年齡段,選用的字號也應有所不同,如老年讀者一般需要大半號到一號,用小四號或四號字。幼兒讀物則需要更大些。
