畫冊設計使用的羅馬體是最古老的字體,早在公元114年刻在托拉雅奴皇帝碑上的文字所用的就是羅馬體。

那個時候羅馬體已經非常成熟了。在以後的手抄本時代羅馬體得到了進一步的發展,特別是文藝復興時期的金屬活字創造了美麗的印刷體,稱為古典羅馬體。隨

著時代的不斷發展,羅馬體也得到了不斷的創新和改良,如18世紀的歌德體,現代的迪鐸體、波多尼體等。

羅馬體字乾襯線與字橫襯線粗細略有不同,都帶有剛柔相濟的弧圓筆勢挺拔有力,嚴謹有序,可讀性強,不會使人感到厭煩,因此作為規範的印刷體,常用於書籍正文。
