隨著科學技術的不斷發展,新材料及新工藝的不斷涌現,在傳統印刷模式的基礎上,出現了無壓印刷,如靜電印刷、噴墨印刷,數字印刷等。

所以現代意義上印刷定義為使用印版或其他方式,將原稿或載體上的文字,圖像信息,借助於油或色料,批量地轉移到承印物錶面,使其再現的技術凡是將原稿的圖文信息,經有壓或無壓印刷形式,轉移到承印物錶面的工藝技術是一種狹義的概念。

而廣義的印刷工藝包括了印前處理、制版、印刷和印後加工工藝印刷的主要作用是復制,其次是美化生活。印刷品與電影,電視,錄音,網絡等媒介載體一樣具有傳播和儲存信息的功能。但其傳播和儲存的方法不同,它不需借助任何的儀器設備,只要通過眼睛的感官便可獲得信息。因此,在當今文化傳媒趨多樣化的形勢下,印刷品仍以其簡便的傳播和儲存方法占據著主導地位。
