作為傳統審美觀念的基礎,是視覺造型的基本也是中國畫論對二維平面中形式空間的高度概括。空間是任何畫面都必不可少的。版面設計的形象是文字、圖形、線條塊等,要使人感到它的存在,必須要用空間將其襯托出來,成為視覺形象。形象是實體,具有緊張、密度高、前進的感覺。

空間則虛,版面上表現為留白,即沒有任何圖文出現的空白,也可以表現為細弱的文字、圖片、色彩等虛面,但其性質卻沒變。無論留白或虛面都是為了襯托主體形象。形象與空間在版面中的關系是:虛托實,白襯黑,相輔相成的必然統一體在版面設計中空間與形象的重要性是相等的。

讀者的興趣往往在文圖片上,註意和關心的是閱讀是否方便,是否舒適一般不會註意到留白對版面所產生的作用和效果。而設計者則必須處理好形象與空間的關系,留下合理的空白烘托設計主題,渲染氛圍,以引導和提高讀者的興趣。

擁擠的空間無法顯示主次零亂無序的版面很難令讀者喜歡無論是傳統的有版心設計還是無版心設計,留白量的多少要視該書所表現的內容、書籍類型及編扎式法則而定。

譬如,文字信息多於圖片的報刊雜志,留白較少,為便於閱讀必須強調秩序,運用網格於使大量的文字和圖片顯得清晰、有條理;而休閑抒情、藝術類的書籍留白則較多,中國畫論“密不透可跑馬”的空間處理說法,同樣適合於版面設計。

這類書籍在編排上更註重節奏、對比,以突出版面的使讀者能輕松、流暢地順著流程的導向獲取信息。
