幾乎世界上所有的民族都有將色彩與特定的事物和事件聯系在一起的習俗,那些藏在人們的想象力深處的奇聞怪事便是以這些事件為素材的。

我們很難知道那些色彩的神話是怎麽起源的,最為合理的解釋就是某些不尋常的事件在一個合乎邏輯或不合乎邏輯的順序中發生了多次,這使得人們相信這種色彩和事物的發生有著密切的聯系,會再次發生。

迷信一旦形成,便無法破除它,哪怕那隻是偶然的產物。有一個古老的迷信說如果一隻紅鳥進了門,便會給主人帶來好運;如果一隻白鴿在一個人身邊盤旋,就會給他帶來幸福;如果和一隻黑貓迎面相遇,災禍便會接踵而至,倘若那貓是灰色的則恰恰相反。

而關於蝴蝶的說法則是白蝴蝶帶來健康,黑蝴蝶帶來死亡,黃蝴蝶則是要患疾病的先兆。
