隨著社會經濟的發展,隨著人們審美能力的提高,在袁銀昌、呂敬人等一大批書籍設計師的帶動下,我國書籍設計的整體性觀念不斷在實踐上得到加強:設計師對本土文化審美的回歸,對書捲氣息的尊重:註重書籍文本傳播功能的同時強調審美表現;關註文本內容的基礎上充分利用材質工藝的美感;重視挖掘傳統元素的同時不斷融入國外先進設計觀念等等,每一方面的探索都是對書籍設計整體性的更高追求。

在具體的書籍設計過程中,設計者關註的內容更加全面和細膩對開本的體量感、版式的規格、印刷的品質、文字的編排樣式、插圖的精細與否、墨色的感受、裝幀與內容的關系等等都有十分細致的思量。

在整體與局部的把握上,設計者既要充分設計書籍局部的合適位置,又要統籌考慮局部之間的關系,使諸多局部適合書籍的整體格調。調動書籍的物性結構要素(如:函套、護封、腰帶、封面、環襯、扉頁、正文頁、版權頁等)、工藝要素(如:開本、精裝、平裝、材料、印刷、裝訂等)以及平面視覺元素(如:文字編排、插圖設計、色彩分配等)的和諧共生。

使書籍設計不僅是從二維到三維的整體構成,更能在讀者的翻閱過程中,伴著時間的進程,生發出流動之美。
