​縑帛,是絲織品的統稱,與今天的書畫用絹大致相同。流行於公元前6世紀至5世紀之間,曾作為書籍功能使用,特點是書寫面積較大、字跡清晰、質輕,易折疊,書寫方便便於攜帶。尺寸長短可根據文字的多少,裁成段,捲成一束,稱為“一捲”。縑帛常作為書寫材料,與簡牘同期使用,自簡牘和縑帛作為書寫材料起,這種形式被書史學家認為是真正意義上的書籍。

縑帛書多為統治者書寫公文或繪畫用,一般書籍使用較少。縑帛書實際上是捲軸裝的前身也是捲軸裝的一種。

縑帛是用蠶絲織成的,往往部書就寫在一捲縑帛上,所以後來有以捲計書的說法。縑帛柔軟、光滑、輕薄,易於運筆、舒捲。縑帛也同樣有許多不便之處,一旦書寫不易更改。
