​蝴蝶裝起始於五代,盛行於宋朝,是把書頁依照中縫,將印有文字的一面朝里,對折起來,再以中縫為準,將全書各頁對齊,用糨糊黏附在另一包裝紙上,有時用絲織品作為封面面料,最後裁齊成冊的裝訂形式。因翻閱時的書頁如蝴蝶展翅一般而得名。此類書有書脊、書口,書的上端稱書首,下端稱書根,某些書根上還提有書名、捲次。書根向外側擺放便於查閱。蝴蝶裝到了元代時期逐漸被包背裝形式取代。
