​精裝書籍在清代已經出現,是西方的舶來方法。精裝書在裝訂技術和用材上都比平裝書籍講究,書芯外通常用硬質材料(硬紙、皮革、織物、塑料、麻絲、漆布)做封面還可以配上凹凸印、燙金銀、鑲嵌等輔助手段裝飾,它比平裝書籍精美耐用,工藝要求也較高平脊的精裝多採用硬紙版材質做護封的里襯,形狀平整,並能節約成本。
