排式是指正文的排字順序與各行的排列方式。我國傳統的書籍大都採用自上而下垂直排列,各行按從右往左排行。這種形式延續古代人的漢字書寫習慣。而現當代出版的書籍,絕大多數採用橫排方式,從左往右排列文字,自上而下排列各行。

段落起行的處理也是為了方便閱讀,在書籍的正文段落之間進行區分時常採用縮格的方式般都占兩個字元的位置,也就是縮進兩格。但進行多欄排列,因每行字數不是很多,開頭也可只空一格。也可依據書籍的性質和內容,採用首字變形、加大、換色等方式加以區分。

據科學研究發現,橫排形式更適宜於人類的眼睛的生理結構,每行字的長度也應有一定的限制,一般不超過80mm-105mm,若是遇到較寬的插圖或表格的內容時,最好以雙欄或多欄進行分隔,以便於快速流暢地閱讀。在現代書籍設計中,排式上已更加自由多樣化,比如橫豎混搭型、放射型、曲線型、三角形、不規則排列等。具體採用什麽形式的排式還要根據書籍的性質、受眾進行理性的選擇使用。
