在比較符合通常規律或較秩序化的圖形中,於某局部加入某種異變元素,使畫面產生反規律性或反秩序化的特異變化,這時整個畫面呈現的就不再是規律性或者秩序性的圖形形象,而是異構圖形形象較常見的異構圖形是在保證畫面中絕大多數基本單元的大小、形狀、位置、方向、色彩的秩序性情況下,使某個基本單位形象或極小部分基本單元形象故意偏離這種秩序,甚至形成強烈反差而產生焦點作用。

這種一個單元(或極少數單元)與多單元的點與面的對比效果是特別容易引人註目的形成異構圖形的般規律可以總計為:用同類圖形重復展現,產生背景感。再在背景中的某一處,突出異樣圖形,加入某一特異圖形或者變化其中個圖形的形式。
