書籍設計以讀者為出發點,一切為讀者服務,最終目的是為了滿足不同人群對書籍的多樣化需求。設計者要瞭解不同讀者群體的心理,對不同類型的書籍量體裁衣。讀者群體可以分為以下幾類

(1)按民族分類:
不同的國家、民族之間存在著差異,而同一個國家民族內部也會因地域、文化的不同而產生文化的差異。我國有56個民族,不同的民族有著不同的文化背景和宗教信仰,有著不同的風俗和習慣。例如同一種符號在不同的文化地域中可能會有不同的含義,多樣的民族文化形成了多樣的審美觀念,從而導致人們對書籍設計也有著不同的需求

(2)按地域分類:
居住在世界各地的不同國家、不同膚色的人群會有不同的審美標準。我國地域遼闊,人們生活在不同地方,就會存在文化差異。例如南北文化的差異。


(3)按受教育程度分類:
由於受教育程度的不同,每個人的審美取向就會不同,對書籍的要求也會不同。


(4)按年齡分類:
每個年齡段對書籍的要求是不一樣的。隨著時間的推移,人們對事物的認識以及心理的變化都會導致自身對書籍的審美要求的改變。
