水溶性樹脂主要是丙烯酸共聚物乳液，具有較好的耐久性和力學強度連接料為水基樹脂，常用的有水溶性聚乙烯醇、水溶膠性樹脂；消泡劑為丙三醇液晶的成色機理是：液晶對特定波長光選擇性反射而形成的。


液晶油墨正是利用了液晶的這種特性，使液晶在微弱電流和溫度的影響下，晶格發生變化而顯示出明暗圖案與色彩，液晶整體形成螺旋結構，當光從平行於平面排列的螺旋軸方向入射時，就被分成左旋光和右旋光兩種圓偏振光，其中一種成分的光被透射，另一種成分的光則全被反射。這種現象稱為圓偏振光二色性。

在膽甾型液晶選擇光散射頻帶兩側的波長區域內，具有很強的旋轉性，並且在光散射頻帶左右旋光的方向各不相同。因為大多數膽甾型液晶的螺距對溫度都有很強的依賴性，所以，只要溫度稍有變化，選擇散射光的波長（顏色）就會發生很大的變化。
