連結料的作用是分散顏料和填料，使之形成穩定的懸浮狀膠體，並使油墨具有一定的流動性，從而能順利地轉移到承印物錶面並形成緊附於承印物錶面的硬化墨膜。作為溫致變色油墨的連結料，應具備的條件是耐溫性好、附著力強，顏色淺且不與顏料組分起化學反應樹脂的種類對顏料示溫效果不同，對顏料的分散性、耐潮性和變色溫度都有一定的影響，要使變色油墨達到預期的效果，就必須根據對油墨的綜合性能要求選用合適的變色油墨的連結料，連結料所用的樹脂有天然樹脂和合成樹脂，例如可選用蟲膠清漆、醇酸樹脂、醛樹脂，氨基樹脂、丙烯酸樹脂以及乙烯類樹脂等作為低溫變色油墨的連結料：選用環氧樹脂、有機硅樹脂、酚醛樹脂作為高溫變色油墨的連結料。樹脂的用量不同會對變色溫度產生一定的影響，對同一樹脂來說，用量大，變色溫度就高，這是由於顏料粒子在量大的連結料中被相互隔離，降低了它們的物理或化學變化程度，從而使變色溫度升高。
