預印刷的方式主要有凹版預印和柔版預印，其中又以凹版預印為主，是先對捲筒紙進行印刷，印刷後仍然收料成捲筒紙，再將印刷好的捲筒紙作為紙箱面紙，做成瓦楞紙箱板，再切成箱的工藝。與傳統工藝相比，成本低，效率高，廢品率低，便於生產管理，日前，歐美等發達國家瓦楞紙箱總產量的30%均採用預印技術，用捲筒紙預印方式生產高檔彩色瓦楞紙箱將成為未來包裝業，特別是高檔紙箱印刷的發展趨勢。

預印刷直接在平滑的紙面上進行，避免了直接印刷對紙箱強度造成的損傷，成型質量較高，採用捲筒紙印刷方式，可以實現不停機換紙，適合高質量、大批量產品的生產。預印好的圖案在瓦楞生產線上進行紙板的生產，切斷時就要考慮圖案的因素，因此要在橫切刀上加裝光電跟蹤橫切控制系統，從而在圖案的分界處能準確切斷紙板。

要適應預印的高速生產，對相應的印刷包裝材質也提出了更高的要求，既要求紙張具備很高的邊壓強度和耐破性能，又要求紙張的平滑度好，以達到良好的適印性。同時，預印用油墨也要求能經受烘乾道的高溫而不變色，具有耐熱、耐摩擦的良好性能。
