變色顏料是溫致變色油墨的基本組成部分。該油最受熱發生顏色變化，主要取決於變色顏料，是配製溫致變色油墨的核心或基礎。

作為溫致變色油墨的顏料必須具備以下條件：

對溫度敏感，在常溫下有固定明顯的顏色，且當達到預定溫度時變色要迅速，有明顯的變色界限，即變色溫度區間要窄，變色前後色差要大，

受外界環境影響要小，在光照，湖濕不可逆變色顏料不可逆交色顏料常用的有鉛、鎳鑽、鐵、鍋銀，鋅、錳、氣候條件下性能穩定，不分解，不褪色。

鎂等的硫酸鹽、硝酸鹽、磷酸鹽、鉻酸鹽、硫化物、氧化物以及偶氮顏料、酞菁顏料、芳基甲烷染料等。這些顏料或染料變色都是來自其本身發生熱分解或氧化、

化合所引起的這種變化是化學變化，因而是不可逆的。當然，一些物理變化也有不可逆的，其種類及變色值得註意的是，所有活性顏料、偶氮染料、分散型染料在60-300℃時變色並不明顯或


由於漸變原因失去使用價值。而某些鹼性染料、絡合物及無機鹽類在300℃以下存在變色不可逆變色顏料的變色機理：

不可逆變色顏料的變色都是因為變色顏料受熱時發生了物點，可以作溫致變色顏料。
