意象是對自然形態的感受,經過心靈的醞釀,表現出心中之意。它既是客觀存在的又是和客觀有距離的,註意了人的情感意志的表達,所表現出的形象介於是與不是之間。是與不是之間是中國繪畫的高深境界,是物與心之間互動的把握。意象不是對自然形態的模仿,是對自然形態的認識和對圖形設計內容的理解而產生出意象造型理念,將這種理念通過手與意的結合傳達出來。

意象造型所吸收的藝術形式很多,有對漢字進行的吸收。漢字是象形文字,本身就含有意象特徵因素,書法藝術更是意在筆先,以意見形。再有對中國寫意畫的吸收。國畫寫意造型其筆墨都是意態狀況,任何一個局部的筆墨形狀都和自然形態不相同,也不能說明是什麽,但是整體觀之能夠看出形態意蘊。除了對中國藝術吸取還有對外國藝術的借鑒,對表現主義繪畫風格的吸取,追求油畫的筆觸,厚厚的油畫質感,色彩明亮、造型誇張等油畫特有的繪畫趣味。還有借鑒版畫的效果,木刻版畫的意象性刀法,在黑與白中、虛與實中構成了具有節奏、韻律的形象,運用於平面設計中可傳達商品的文化感與歷史感。木刻版畫效果的圖形創意適合運用於文化招貼、書籍裝飾和具有文化歷史的商品包裝,如歷史悠久的酒、老字號的食品等
