書籍設計包括很多內容,有封面設計、扉頁設計、插圖設計、正文設計、版式設計、印刷裝訂等,把這些內容歸結起來形成書籍形態設計的四大要素:文字、圖形、色彩、材料。

書籍設計作為特殊的平面設計形式既是立體的,也是平面的,這種立體是由許多平面所組成的。從外表上看它是面體,由封面、書脊、封底、書口組成:從讀者讀書的過程看,由外入內一頁一頁的翻動通過封面、環襯、扉頁,漸漸到正文,每一個頁面都是平面的。

相對於其他平面設計來說相對復雜一些,所以設計者在掌握書稿的信息內容後,要對其進行理性的整理,不論是什麽性質、什麽內容的書稿,我們都要從四大要素著手,進行有想象力、創造力的多次整體形態設計,使諸要素達到外表與內在、形態與神態的完美統一。
