初校是整個校對工作的基礎,對後面的校次的影響很大。初校應填好校樣中的全部“倒空”(在鉛排時代,因為缺字、看不清原稿或其他種種原因,暫時沒有排上的字和符號,往往把鉛活字倒過來排在字空的位置上,打出校樣來是一個黑色實地的方塊(■),很醒目,便於校對。現在採用計算機排版,有些排版公司排上o”或“■”,以便引起校對人員和編輯的註意),基本上消滅多字、漏字、錯字等差錯,特別是消滅多行、少行、串列、另行起排及其他影響版面統動的錯誤。核對圖的正倒及解決圖、表的適當安放位置。註意版式是不是符合原稿所批註的要求,包括標題、表題、圖題、字體、字號等。在採用當頁註時,註意正文中腳註序號與註文是否在同一面上。檢查註解和參考文獻等的序號是否與正文所註的完全相符。
