由於現有的記錄介質只對光強有響應，而對位相變化無反應，因此，要記錄光波的位相，就需要設法把位相關系轉換成光強（振幅）變化。由於乾涉條紋的光強分佈和形狀與兩個相乾光束的振幅和位相是密切相關的，因此在全息照相中巧妙地利用了光的乾涉原理達到了同時記錄包括光波位相和振幅在內的全部信息的目的。普通照相是採用一步成像方法，即將被物體錶面反射、散射或輻射出的光通過透鏡（照相機鏡頭）一次成像於感光膠片上，經過顯影、定影等沖洗工序處理後便直接獲得物體的像。而全息照相是採取一種全新的“無透鏡”兩步成像技術。第一步是全息記錄過程，即拍攝和制備全息照片（亦稱全息圖）：第二步是全息再現過程，即重現物像
