插圖在版面上的占位最基本的要求是圖文呼應,即讀到相正文時,應在附近能看到該圖。也就是說,一般要把正文中的插排在與其有關的文字附近,並按照先看文字後見圖的原則處理,文圖應緊緊相連。但在實際的排版中和版面設計中,往往不能滿足上述的要求,需要對插圖的占位做必要的調整,這時可稍作前後移動,但不要離正文太遠,只限於在本節內移動,不能超越節題。從版面藝術的角度來考慮,插圖的占位既要滿足閱讀的方便,又要照顧到版面的構圖,兩者相互結合,是書刊插圖占位的基本原則圖與圖之間要適當排三行以上的文字,以做間隔,插圖上下避免空行。版面開頭宜先排三至五行文字後再排圖。若兩圖比較接近時可以並排,不必硬性錯開而造成版面凌亂。總之,插圖排版的關鍵是在版面位置上合理安排插圖。插圖排版既要使版面美觀,又要便於閱讀。
