燙印防偽技術可以在普通燙印機上（或進行簡單改造）完成燙印工藝，不需投入太多的資金，從而有效減少了生產成本。目前，燙印防偽技術已廣泛應用於各種煙酒、食品、藥品、化妝晶等的防偽包裝和印刷中，其中，立體燙印技術在防偽包裝和印刷產品中的應用中具有明顯的優勢。

立體燙印技術也稱為凹凸燙印技術、三維燙印技術、立體燙金技術等。立體燙印即燙印加工成的圖文有明顯的高度立體層次，突兀於印刷品錶面之上。它既不同於平面燙印也不同於凹凸壓印，實質上是燙印和壓凹凸兩種技術同時作用於印刷品。因此，立體燙印技術也可以看作是“燙印+凹凸”組合工藝，是燙印技術和凹凸壓印技術相結合的一種復合技術，是利用腐蝕或雕刻技術將燙印和壓凹凸的圖文製作成一個上下配合的陰模凹版和陽模凸版，實現燙印和凹凸壓印技術一次完成的工藝過程。這種工藝同時完成燙印和壓凹凸，減少了加工工序和套印不準產生的廢品，提高了生產率和產品質量。由於立體燙印形成的產品效果是呈浮雕狀的立體圖案，不能在其上再進行印刷，因此必須採用“先印後燙”的工藝過程，同時由於它的高精度和高質量要求，不太適合採用冷燙印技術，而比較適合用熱燙印技術。
