縮微技術的防偽原理是將文字字體設計的非常小，使得採用拷貝等手段無法復制一般要求將中文字高縮小到022mm以內，英文字高縮小到02mm以內進行印刷，在實際應用中，膠印中縮微文字字高一般為0.3～0.5mm，凹印中縮微文字字高一般為0.15～0.3mm縮微技術突出的特點是能以“字”替“線”，一根細細的線，仔細一看卻發覺是由文字構成，再結合版紋的其他功能，便可以將“文字線”生成許多變化。這種形式的防偽手段可以應用在票據、包裝、證件、證卡上。

縮微是版紋系統中應用最簡便的一種方法，一般需與其他功能結合使用。版紋設計系統中的縮微功能，可以結合其他功能，如將縮微做成困花狀、花邊狀及各種不同類型的組合，使縮微的變化豐富且有創意，如在暗記應用方面，可以用來做縮微字底紋，也可以用來做縮微字花邊：又如將一組文字做成造型流暢的曲線，巧妙交織纏繞，構成團花形狀精巧別致，變化豐富多樣。縮微和其他版紋效果聯合運用，可以增強其防偽效果近年來由於凹版印刷在我國包裝印刷行業的飛速發展，各凹印廠家特別是激光雕刻的出現，對凹印製版水平也有較大地提高，縮微文字在凹印製版中的應用越來越多，成為高檔包裝防偽的一個新亮點
